This post is a short story to my self-discovery and path to answering this question. For me, it is in regards with dance and my life.

Before I continue, I'd like to share this question with and for you to calibrate your thoughts. If by the end of this post you would like to express your answer to this question, please feel free to comment to this post and share your personal insight and experience!

"Why do you do what you do?"

A couple of days ago, our dance teacher asked us this question:

"Why do you dance?"

So around the circle we go, each giving their answers.

Then it was my turn to answer.

"I don't know how to explain."

Those were the very words. I could not, for the life of me, string a sentence together as to why I dance. It's not that I don't know why I dance - I just don't know what words and how I could phrase those words to give a (self)satisfactory answer.

For the next few days, I did attempt at putting a sentence together. It was tough.

It wasn't the first time our teacher asked us that question - the last time he asked, I still remember I said this:

"I don't know the reason to why I dance, and I don't want to know the reason."

It sounds really weird, but back then I really didn't want to know. I just went with my <strike>irrationality</strike> feelings.

Shortly after that day, I found myself beginning to question the reason that led me to dance, continue dancing and always will dance.

I'm not going to lie - it really got on my nerves. I just couldn't find the answer.

It was probably like... what Confucius felt when he initially sought out the meaning to life.

Fast forward however (few months later, today), as I was on my way home after dance, I started feeling - yes, feeling - the word to describe the reason I dance.

That word is: Acceptance.

Of course, I love dance. Dance is the essence to my life. But those words weren't elaborate enough, to me, as reasons to clarify what that continuous, nagging feeling within was.

Interestingly enough, it all then led to me recalling some things I've said, not so long ago, to my friend. It was in regards with loving someone or something:

"... it's to be able to share that happiness when it's there, accept the sadness when it comes, and be patient when the anger and pain comes along - to know and accept that, at the end of the day, to love this thing or person, is to love without any conditions, under any conditions."

All the while, I was thinking of dance. I didn't even realise it; only when the word 'acceptance' hit me (like a big pink school bus!)

"I dance - and I will always dance - because to and with dance, I am able to love without any conditions, under any conditions."

It may seem ludicrous or out-of-touch with reality, but hereon, I will end this post with a particular quote for thought:

"A man is but the product of his thoughts. What he thinks, he becomes."

Of the greatest love, anonymously,
I'd smile and say, I'd cry and say:
"The story would probably go this way..."

"He was the brightest star above the Earth,
Yet far, far away in time and space.
When I look, I look at the past,
For only the star's illusion is what lasts."
"He was the Aurora sifting through the skies,
So surreal, magical and Heavenly divine.
In my memory, I wish it'll never fade,
For it was never Aurora's nature to remain."

"He was the dancer to my stage,
For he moved my heart without a prose.
I'd never learn what he tried to convey,
For I couldn't stay on until the curtains closed."

"The story didn't have to go this way,
But I chose to leave and walk away.
So the story, indeed, went this way.
I wonder how it'd go if I stayed?"

It has been awhile! How have your lives been? 2013 so far so good? :)

To be frank, many a-times I have started on a BoaT blog post, but stopped short because I could not continue writing - I felt that 'at-the-moment' inspiration, but it simply could not last long. (That's what she said! *angel face*)

But... I am back! Along with my top 5 stage productions that I can never forget!

This post came about as I was on Youtube (still am actually, while writing this post) and came across Taylor Swift's recent live performance at the Brits Awards 2013, with the song 'I Knew You Were Trouble' - which I absolutely love. I eventually came to love the production of that live performance as well. After watching that, it triggered me to walk down memory lane and think about the few (and I do mean, few) stage productions that have, until this day, remained a lasting impact on me.

As a dancer and when I was younger, I used to see performance from a first-person view only - I'm up on the stage, performing my heart out and all that jazz. However, after experiencing quite a dramatic retraction from my dance and performing life, alongside having to make my way up from the very bottom again, I've actually gained a very interesting insight that I've always tend to overlook - looking at the whole picture.

See, I don't know if it came with the fact that I grew older and opened my eyes more (i.e. become wiser, lol) or the impact from the sudden change of life (again), but either way, I've come to appreciate and am taking the time to analyse the WHOLE production of a performance - the lights, the sound, the video-recording, the expressions of the various participants, the manic that is going on behind-the-scenes/backstage (yep, that should be a performance on its own! It is so manic at the time, but when you look back at it, it's golden!), the clothes, makeup, digital art, pyro/aqua/confetti/bubble etc.-technics, the performer(s), and of course, the audience.

How amazing, is it not? When we think about it in detail; the aggregation of the various atmospheres, surroundings and people that actually determine the overall impact of the production. It is, seriously, magnifique - and the best part of this is the paradox: each person, as a team player, has to do their utmost best as an individual, yet they have to BE a team and BOOM, the result can be at such great level!

ANYWAYS, before I go any further off track, let's allow my video selections (hopefully, successfully) convey my awe of these beautiful masterpieces.

P.S. The ones I have chosen are all largely commercialised - there are other productions that I have in mind, but I've renamed it as 'Commercial Stage' to be more specific. :) Enjoy!

P.P.S. It is not in any specific order. It's all too good - it'll be like asking me to put in order between Japanese sushi, Korean marinated, grilled meat and like, Krispy Kreme doughnuts... No, just no.

a) Taylor Swift's 'I Knew You Were Trouble' Performance @ Brit Awards 2013

Since this was mentioned earlier on, I might as well start off with this! I especially loved the costumes and how the backup singers and the musicians were placed on stage; the whole design of the stage actually.

b) Beyonce's 'Run The World' Performance @ Billboard Awards 2011

Those digital-ography though! All those intricate details, to the boot. ♥ And also, the positioning of the dancers really caught my eye as well!

c) Charice's 'Listen' Performance @ Oscar After-Party 2009

Charice has actually performed this song live at other venues and with different productions and staging, but somehow this particular production resonated in my mind. The flooring of the stage and the decor, Charice's rawness and simplicity there and the moments of the audience - it is all just class. The fact that when I thought of Charice, the vision of this came up - that should say a lot about impact! (of course, due to her voice as well!)

d) (i) Black Swan - Opening and Final scene & (ii) Memoirs of a Geisha - Sayuri's Dance (I know... there are 2-in-1 AND they're not live, commercial stages but I really, really, really had to put these in! ...*puppy eyes*)

I would actually like to say that the WHOLE movie production of Black Swan and Memoirs should be included in this, but since we're talking about stage specifically- I chose the two (and 1/2) most heart-stopping moments for me.

Maybe because I am a dancer myself as well, I highly empathise the words, scene, emotions and atmosphere present throughout. If there are any movies that I will never forget, it is this movie and Memoirs of a Geisha - and especially these stage scenes.

Black Swan's opening scene and Sayuri's Dance in Memoirs are so hauntingly beautiful. Like Charice's performance at the Oscar's AP, it is leaning more towards visionary simplicity compared to the earlier videos, BUT, I can only imagine how much work has gone into creating all their stages and productions! The detailed makeup, closeups and exacting angles on their expressions and movements, lighting, etc. (I re-watched the final scene of Black Swan and it STILL brings tears to my eyes...)

e) Bruno Mars' 'It Will Rain' Performance @ X Factor USA (Nov) 2011

I knew I would fall in love completely with this the moment I started watching it. No, not only because it was Mr. Mars, but because of that beginning; that unnervingly, beautiful stillness.

A standing ovation really, to the production team of this stage performance - the lighting and digital art were so clean-cut and (near-)perfect . To put it in another way: it was like the (near-)perfect glazed doughnut - it did not need any more toppings, deep-frying or heavy batter, etc. It was just the (near-)perfect formula.
The surrounding darkness lightens her sight.
What seems like loneliness is barely a manifesto,
of peace and tranquility on site.

That is the power of the home:
a foundation stronger than titanium;
unyielding yet more pliable than gold,
peaceful yet more explosive than plutonium.
Ohana, ohana, ohana.
Ohana, ohana, ohana,
with love, 'twas born within.
following the melody of the wind.
Each wave is their beat, to prepare,
for the moment of magic within.

The music composed by the crashing of waves,
with the rhythm of the wind on their face.
The spotlight shining down from the sun's rays,
their five senses alive and embraced.

A jump, a glide, a touch of the water.
a speed unprecedented but controlled.
For this is the dance of the graceful kitesurfer,
through the eyes of a dancer it was told.
I, for one, and as a student, live on what I’d like to call: ‘tear, dip & munch’ food – tear it from the packet, dip it in a sauce (from a packet, of course) and munch away. Even when I do cook, the groceries that I buy are from Tesco, Tesco, Tesco, and the occasional Sainsbury’s.

Yet, at about a similar walking distance as my trip from home-to-Tesco, is the local market. Fresh fish, local meat and independent food stalls – all of which are dwindling away in presence, as the reliance on supermarkets are on a constant rise. Wouldn’t it be great if that balance is shifted towards independent, local brands that are more likely to guarantee you good, hearty food; rather than mass-manufactured products – and yet still be accessible and convenient to you?

When it comes to songs, 90% of the time, I will love it if I love the lyrics - even if I don't agree with the music itself. Personally, I find that the lyrics are the foundations of songs (not including Classical, DnB, Dubs, electronica - though they may have brief sections of lyrics - but those are a completely different story).

Therefore, few days ago, I've decided to select my top (and top-of-the-head) 10 most favourite lyrics that I have ever come across. You may agree, you may not - feel free to comment with your most favourite lyrics!
Afterall, I have not heard all of the many, thousands & thousands of songs out there - so it would be great to come across some beautiful songs!

This list is just a summary of the many lyrics I love - out of all the artists I've listened to, I'm pretty sure I love AT LEAST one of their songs - so don't see this list as definitive, but just a few selections! :)

10) "Better Man" - Robbie Williams

"As my soul, heals the shame.
I will grow, through this pain.
Lord I'm doing, all I can - to be a better man."

9) "Blackbird" - The Beatles

"Blackbird singing in the dead of night.
Take these broken wings and learn to fly.
All your life, you were only waiting,
for this moment to arise."

8) "Like a Boy" - Ciara

"What if I, had a thing on the side, made you cry?
Would the rules change up, or would they still apply?
If I, played you like a toy?
sometimes I wish I could act like a boy."

7) "Livin' on a Prayer" - Bon Jovi

"She says, 'we gotta hold on to what we got,
cause it doesn't make a difference if we make it or not.
We've got each other and that's alot for love..
We'll give it a shot.'
(OHHHHHH! <-- uh, mandatory exaggeration, DUH!) We're halfway there,
(ohhhhOH!) livin on a prayer.
Take my hand, and we'll make it I swear..
(ooohhhOH!) livin' on a prayer."

6) "Lose Yourself" - Eminem

"You better lose yourself in the music, the moment
You own it, you better never let it go
You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow
This opportunity comes once in a lifetime."

5) "I Don't Want to Be" - Gavin DeGraw

"I don't want to be anything
other than what I've been trying to be lately.
All I have to do, is think of me,
and I have peace of mind.
I'm tired of looking 'round rooms,
wondering what I gotta do - or who I'm supposed to be.
I don't want to be anything, other than me."

4) "Dear God" - Avenged Sevenfold

"Dear God, the only thing I ask of you,
is to hold her when I'm not around -
when I'm much too far away.
We all need, that person who can be true to you
but I left her when I found her -
and now I wished I stayed.
Cuz I'm lonely, and tired,
I'm missing you again, oh no.
Once again."

3) "Scrubs" - TLC

"No, I don't want your number.
No, I don't want to give you mine,
and no, I don't want to meet you nowhere.
No, I don't want none of your time and
No, I don't want no scrub.
A scrub is a guy that can't get no love from me.
Hanging out the passenger side of his best friend's ride -
trying to holler at me."

2) "Liquor Store Blues" - Bruno Mars

"I'll take one shot for my pain
One drag for my sorrow
Get messed up today
I'll be okay tomorrow."

1) "Mirrors" - Lil Wayne ft. Bruno Mars

"I see my momma smile thats a blessin
I see the change, I see the message
and no message could been any clearer
So I’m stared with the man in the…
Mirror on the wall (MJ taught me that),
here we are again.
Through my rise and fall -
you've been my only friend.
You told me that they can understand the man I am.
So why, are we, talkin' to each other again?"

(Well, unless it's about Mr. Mars, of course!) So it's kind of like a live report, but not?... Well, if you've missed the Brit Awards just now, here's a rundown of events. Ok, let's go!

The Brit Awards '12, presented by James Corden, kicked off with a performance by Florence Welch. Kylie Minogue then proceeded to presenting the first award of the night: Best Female Solo Artist Award - won by Adele!

-Edit- : Coldplay, Olly Murs and Rizzle Kicks also performed on the Brit Awards stage.

Next on, Jessie J (I do love that dress!) and Jack Whitehall came on to present Best International Male Solo Artist Award - won by, of course, Bruno Mars! :)

The beautiful dress that Jessie J wore for the evening: (and did I mention that I love the hair?!)

(Photograph taken from Capitalfm.com)

Ed Sheeran was next to grace the stage and delivered a beautiful, angelic performance with his song 'Lego House.'

The British Single Award is won by X-Factor creation: One Direction, for
their song "What makes you Beautiful" - presented by Tinie Tempah.

International Female Solo Artist Award (OH MY GOD, Jenson Button suddenly appeared - to present this award - and made me so happy! - well, not as happy as realizing Mars' there...) - won by Rihanna! To be honest, I wasn't really surprised that she won it.

Noel Gallagher then comes on with his song: 'What A Life' I wouldn't say I am particularly impressed with the song and singing, but it wasn't an ear-sore either - so all was fine. Moving on.

Plan B then takes the stage after the interval - and Amy Winehouse's tribute - to present the British Male Solo Artist Award... *drum rolls*... Ed Sheeran! Woo! He's such a cutie: *halfway through thank you speech* ".. I want to thank my label ... I'm really bad at this, thank you'

Hughy Morgan and Jo Wiley then presents the British Group Award - won by: Coldplay - 3rd time (previous years: 2001; 2003) to win this award! Fair play to them, they do the Brits proud!

(At this moment, I wonder who are the rest of the nominees for the British Album of the Year and who will win it? Hopefully Ed Sheeran! It would be quite deservedly so!)

Adele's turn to perform, singing "Rolling in the Deep" - you go girl! Although I've heard this song over, and over again - it is actually my first time watching her sing it live! She seems slightly off though, in this performance.. I have yet to watch her previous 'Someone like you' performance - but this performance seemed a slight step back, passion-wise - still amazing though! To hit all those notes, not long after her surgery!

The International Group Award is next - presented by Brian May and Roger Taylor, the award is won by... (hopefully Maroon 5!) ... However, Foo Fighters snag this award!

CESC FABREGAS!! (Omg, my 3rd surprise and happiness of
the evening!) And Nicole Scherzinger comes on presenting Best British Breakthrough Artist.. And the winner is... Ed Sheeran! Wow, it sure is Mr. Sheeran's breakthrough year!

The love of my life, Bruno Mars, then comes on and performs a heavily-influenced jazz version of 'Just The Way You Are.' I'm over the moon, he is amazing.. His voice and his musical sense just captivates me. To be fair though, I wouldn't say this is his most spectacular performance. I do like the fact that he usually adds a different musical element to his songs in his live performances.

Back from intermission, Will.i.am and Rob Brydon comes on to presents the International Breakthrough Act - won by Lana Del Rey, beating Nicki Minaj - now that is a surprise! (A good one - I love Del Rey's voice!) I did hope she would win, though when Nicki Minaj was mentioned as a nominee, I'd actually thought Minaj will win hands down. Commercially, Minaj overflows, but Del Rey's voice has shot her to the stars!

Performance time! And Rihanna is now on - singing 'We Found Love.' I love her songs, but that was an... Unsettling performance - I felt slightly like.. 'eh? Uh.. Ok, no.' i have to say though, aesthetically, it was brilliant!

Ray Winstone is next to present the Outstanding Contribution to Music Award to Blur. Blur will also be the closing performance of Brit Awards 2012. With this being their 5th award, Blur has been in the Brit pop music scene for 21 years! It is also confirmed that they will be performing at the Olympics' closing ceremony.

Finally, the last (and biggest) award: British Album of the Year - presented by the Mr. George Michael (cue: "Ohhh yeaaaa") .. Won by, and I quote Mr. Michael: "without a doubt.." - Adele, with '21'. Again, hardly a surprise - and it does seem like Adele herself knew she's got it in the bag.

The night ends with Blur performing "Boys and Girls", Song 2" and "Park Life" (With a little guest appearance by Phil Daniels aka 'Kevin' from Eastenders! Hilarious!) Much respect to them! They must feel so honoured to be presented with the Outstanding Contribution to Music award!

I have to say, the funniest moment was when Labyrinth camera-bombed Corden - that was a real LOL moment.

There you have it! A live - yet not really live - rundown of the Brit Awards 2012 .. And on that note - Brit Awards 2012 c'est finis!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04787316964652929354noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4860732890187128691.post-51774892686020091792012-02-06T09:20:00.002+08:002012-04-25T09:07:15.738+08:00According to Jing: Top 10 sexiest men on the PlanetHaving come across Heat's 101 hottest hunks on the planet, I thought: what better way to spend one's Sunday night than oogling over sexy, charismatic men? I came across Mr. Sevani when I first watched "Step Up 2: The Streets." He has this sort of geeky and adorable look about him, but hey-ho, watch him move in the final dance scene in Step Up 2 and the sexy metre is on overload.

I had a little bit of a hard time choosing between him and 'El Nino' Torres - however Fabregas still is the winner due to my longstanding admiration for him. Such a pity he doesn't play for Arsenal no more (for now!)
